I've decided to go back to basics and rewrite some of the back-end code for the controls and tidied up some of the graphics. I've created a basic track that can now be played in the browser... ooooh!

It reminds me a lot of GeneRally! It has potential!!!
I like this game genre and even began to prototype a racing game, but in 3D, still in a very early phase.

Thanks for the comments, it's my first game using Gamemaker so i'm learning as I go. Hopefully it lives up to the idea that's in my head!
